Methodology
How the numbers are produced — and what they don't mean.
A report is only worth what a sceptical buyer can check. This page sets out every calculation, every data source, and every limit we know about.
Report schema 1.0 · scoring methodology battery-range-v1. Every report records the methodology version it was generated under, so changes here never silently restate a report already in a buyer’s hands.
Where the data comes from
All vehicle data in a Greenevreport report is retrieved from Tesla’s Fleet API using an access token the vehicle’s owner granted through Tesla’s own sign-in. We do not use third-party aggregators, and we do not accept figures typed in by the seller. If Tesla does not return a value, the report says the value is not available.
The Battery & Range Score
The score is the vehicle’s estimated retained range, expressed as a number out of 100. It is deliberately a single, checkable quantity rather than a blended index:
- The vehicle reports its rated range and its current state of charge at the moment of collection.
- Rated range is extrapolated to a full charge:
range ÷ (state of charge ÷ 100). - That figure is divided by the original EPA-rated range published for this model, year and trim, and multiplied by 100.
- The result is rounded and clamped to a 0–100 range.
A score of 94 therefore means one thing and only one thing: the vehicle’s rated range at a full charge is approximately 94% of the range it was EPA-rated for when new.
Confidence
Extrapolating from a low state of charge magnifies small measurement and rounding differences. Where the vehicle was observed at or above 50% charge, the report marks the figure observed. Below that, it is marked estimated and should be read with a wider margin. Where either input is missing, no score is produced at all — the report does not guess a denominator.
What the score is not
- It is not a measurement of battery pack capacity. Tesla does not expose measured pack capacity in kWh through the Fleet API, so no report can honestly claim to state it.
- It is not a prediction of remaining battery life or of future degradation.
- It is not a guarantee, a certification, or a mechanical assessment of any kind.
- It is not evidence that the vehicle has no problems.
The EPA reference figure
The denominator is the manufacturer’s original EPA-rated range for the specific model, year and trim. Wheel size and configuration change that figure materially, so where we cannot match a vehicle’s exact configuration to a verified reference range, the report reports the retained-range figure as unavailable rather than using an approximate denominator.
Charging history
Tesla’s charging history is a billing record. It lists the sessions Tesla charged money for — Superchargers and paid destination charging — and nothing else. Charging at home is not billed by Tesla and so does not appear in it at all. The session count, energy and spend we report are taken directly from that record and are exact.
The fast-charging versus home-charging split cannot be read from that record, because only one side of it is present. We reconstruct it instead: billed network energy is a known quantity, and the vehicle’s lifetime energy is inferred from the odometer at an assumed 250–300 Wh per mile, since Tesla does not report a vehicle’s actual consumption. The report shows the result as a range across that assumption rather than as a single figure, and labels it an estimate wherever it appears. Energy Tesla did not bill for is almost always Level 2 charging at home or work.
Two limits matter, and both are stated on every report:
- The split is withheld entirely when the billing record does not reach back to the vehicle’s first year. Dividing energy from a partial window by the full odometer would understate fast-charging use, so we publish no split rather than a misleading one. The exact network totals are still shown.
- Sessions predating the vehicle’s association with the current Tesla account are not visible to us at all, so every charging figure describes the current owner’s account rather than the vehicle’s complete history.
Alerts and faults
Reports list the vehicle alerts the car itself reported during the recent window Tesla makes available. This is a narrow window and it is not a service history. It does not include past repairs, dealer or service-centre visits, warranty claims, recalls, or any fault that was cleared before the window began.
A report showing no alerts is not evidence that a vehicle is free of mechanical problems. It states only that the vehicle reported no alerts during a limited period.
Vehicle information
Model, year, trim, configuration, wheels, colour, odometer and software version are read from the vehicle. This is one of the more useful parts of a report precisely because it is unglamorous: it confirms that the listing’s stated mileage and configuration match what the car reports.
VINs are shown partially masked on public pages. The full VIN is visible to the report’s owner in their account.
What a report cannot determine
- Mechanical condition: suspension, brakes, tyres, drivetrain wear, steering, and anything else requiring physical inspection.
- Body condition, paint, panel gaps, or prior collision repair.
- Accident history, title status, salvage branding, or liens.
- Service and repair history.
- Open recalls.
- Anything about the vehicle after the collection date shown on the report.
A Greenevreport report is a complement to an independent pre-purchase inspection, not a replacement for one, and we say so on every report we issue.
When the methodology changes
The scoring methodology is versioned and stored with each report. When it changes, previously issued reports keep the version they were generated under and continue to display it. We will publish what changed and why on this page.
